Equipment Tagging

2min

The ELTON Scanner mobile app requires each piece of equipment to have a unique machine-readable identifier. This document outlines the options for tagging equipment and guides you in choosing the most fitting method:

  • QR Codes: ELTON-generated QR codes.
  • Barcodes: Existing equipment barcodes, such as manufacturers'.
  • Asset tags: Existing company asset tags.

Scanning cautions

  • Camera resolution on your iOS or Android device is very important in being able to successfully read barcodes and QR Codes. Be sure to test your poorest quality mobile device's camera with your smallest physical size barcode label. It is common for older cameras in phones to be unable to read small bar codes. Using high-quality, large format preprinted barcode labels can usually overcome this issue. QR Code labels produced by ELTON use a size that works with all current and recent-generation mobile phones.
  • As mentioned before duplicate tags are not allowed in ELTON. If you use manufacturer's barcodes, different products may have the same serial number. When this happens you must either use the QR code for the items or replace the serial number barcode with another preprinted bar code and record that value in the Equipment Tag field.
  • In machine-readable technology, there is an area referred to as the quiet zone. This is a minimum space on the left and right sides of a barcode to allow for a good read. Ensure that any labels have a sufficient quiet zone to get fast reliable reads. On barcodes, the quiet zone is typically 1/4 inch, while on QR codes the quiet zone is 4.5 modules on all sides (the size of a single dot on a QR code).
