Equipment Tagging

Barcodes

4min

If your equipment already comes with unique barcodes, you can load them to ELTON for identification. During data import, you can populate the Equipment Tag field with the barcode information.

Alternatively or in combination you may utilize barcodes to identify and label equipment. There are some advantages to utilizing barcodes:

  • You have existing Bar Codes on Equipment.
  • You purchase pre-printed bar codes and assign tags as used.
  • You can easily obtain pre-printed durable Bar Code tags,
  • You can replace a damaged barcode in use with a new one and just key in the new value.

Advantages

  • Can be printed on tamper-resistant material
  • Ready for immediate use on new equipment
  • Potentially higher quality than in-house printed labels
  • May serve dual purpose as asset tags
  • Specialty tags available for harsh environments

Disadvantages

  • Requires waiting for label delivery
  • Challenging to match labels with remote equipment
  • Limited ability to include additional data (e.g., serial number, model number)

While not mandatory, the Equipment Tag field enforces uniqueness, ensuring no duplicate barcodes exist within the system.

If you want to use the manufacturer's barcodes on your equipment, make sure the barcode values are unique across all equipment you are tracking and that the barcode is of high enough quality and size to be legible in your worst-resolution phone or tablet.
